Comprehensive Guide to Kenya’s Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)
As of January 5, 2024, Kenya has implemented the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system for travelers. This guide provides detailed information about the new system, including fees, exemptions, and application processes.
What is the eTA?
The eTA is a mandatory travel authorization for most visitors to Kenya. It replaces the previous eVisa system and requires eligible travelers to apply and pay for their eTA online before their journey. The system streamlines traveler identification and improves border management.
Who Needs an eTA?
All travelers to Kenya are required to apply for an eTA unless they fall under the exemptions outlined below.
Exemptions from the eTA Requirement
Holders of Valid Kenyan Documents:
Kenyan passports or one-way Emergency Certificates.
Permanent residence permits, valid work permits, or passes issued by the Government of Kenya.
Valid United Nations Conventional Travel Documents issued by the Government of Kenya.
Diplomatic and International Representatives:
Members of diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited to Kenya.
East African Community (EAC) Citizens:
Citizens of Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda for stays up to six months.
Special Travel Scenarios:
Passengers in transit who do not leave airport precincts.
Passengers arriving and leaving by the same ship without disembarking.
Crew members of any vessel stopping over without leaving the precincts.
Owners of private aircraft refueling in Kenya without leaving the airport precincts.
Cost of the eTA
The standard processing fee for a single-entry eTA is USD 32.50, with an additional bank fee of USD 1.59, totaling USD 34.09 per person.
Fee Exemptions
Official or Diplomatic Passports: Holders of diplomatic, official, or service passports traveling on official duties are exempt from eTA fees.
Citizens of Specific Countries: Nationals from countries with reciprocal visa waiver agreements, such as Comoros, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Republic of Congo, San Marino, and South Africa, have had their eTA fees waived.
